Climbing La Gloria
Thursday
Thursday morning, we ate an early breakfast and headed up the tallest mountain, La Gloria, with our translator Edgar
and driver Alfonzo. We began by walking up a steep and curving mountain road before walking off the path and
straight up the side of the hill. It was quite treacherous and we definitely had to watch where we were stepping!
It took about 2 hours to climb to the top of La Gloria where we enjoyed the magnificent scenery and also some snacks!
Along the trail, we saw a lot of cattle which was surprise to some and a delight to others! On the way down we took
the road, which was less steep although a bit longer. Because of a small injury we opted to wait at a farm along the
way while Alfonzo walked back to get the van. There were many cows, chickens, a puppy, a cute little boy as well as
our hosts Maricela and her brother. After a brief rest there Alfonzo returned. In the afternoon we had the great
pleasure of meeting our cook and learning about her incredible strength and passion. This woman was a candidate
for Vice-mayor of Quilalí. She had to give up her job to campagin and unfortunately her party did not win so she was
left unemployed. Our need for her cooking services benefitted her family greatly. She is an amazing woman
with big dreams for the betterment of Quilalí. Her campaign was one based on meeting the needs of the people.
She hopes to work with Karen and Steve to make some of her dreams for a higher quality of life for the people a reality.

the same lemony taste)
