Managua and Masaya
Friday through Sunday
In the first few days of our trip we explored the captial city of Managua. We ate in a cafe around the corner from
our hotel. We discovered that the outside of the hotel was much nicer than the inside....although it also was a luxurious
place in comparison to some of the facilities in Quilali. The WMU group warned us to take a shower because it would
be bucket showers for most of the rest of the week in Quilali. Right away we experienced a lot of Nicarauga; we split
our time on Saturday between the Masaya market and the Masaya Volcano. We were a bit nervous when we saw the warning
signs that told us to hide under our vehicles in case of an eruption. We circumscribed a crater as well. It was
a treacherous and very steep path; there were also incredibly strong winds! After our busy day of shopping and hiking
we had an amazing meal at El Ranchero restaurant; we got to play on the playground there when we were done eating. We
left Managua Sunday morning. It was a 5-6 hour drive to Quilalí, the road was paved for about 3/4 of the
journey. The scenery was beautiful; it started out very flat, with some farms and rice paddies; we then slowly
we drove up into the mountains!
